Football rivalries give the sport and additional spice and meaning; just like Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi, Pele vs. Maradona. While debates over who is better sometimes be taken too far by critics or fans of the players gives it and extra edge. In Africa there’s no debate greater than Didier Drogba vs Samuel Eto’o two great strikers who made impact at home and abroad in the 2000’s and early 2010’s.
Didier Drogba
Full name Didier Yves Drogba Tebily born on the 11th of March 1978 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Full name Samuel Eto’o Fils born on the 10th of March 1981 in Douala, Cameroon.
By the age of 21, Drogba realized that he had to establish himself as a player soon or else he would have little chance of becoming a professional footballer. He then signed his first professional contract in 1999. Drogba played for three champions’ league namely Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea and Galatasaray. With a total of 92 champions league match’s, 40 goals with a goal ratio of goals per match and 15 assist with an assist ratio of assists per match.
The next season, in the winter transfer windows, he was transferred to la liga term Mallorca on loan. At the end of the season Eto’o left real Madrid signing a permanent deal with Mallorca. Eto’o played for 5 champion’s league teams namely Real Madrid, Mallorca, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea, with a total of 78 champion’s league matches played and 30 goals scored with a goal ratio of goals per match and 19 assists with an assist ratio of assists per game.
DIDIER DROGBA (Premier League played for Chelsea)
In July 2004, Didier Drogba moved to Premier League club Chelsea from Olympique de Marseille for a transfer fee of 24 million Euros, making him the most expensive Ivorian Player in history. Drogba scored his first goal for the club in his third match against Crystal Palace, in his debut season Drogba helped the club win their first league title in 50 years and a year later he won another premier league title. Drogba played a total of 254 premier league matches scoring a total of 104 goals and a goal ratio of goals per game, and 64 assists with and assists ratio of assists per game.
SAMUEL ETO’O (La Liga played for Mallorca and Barcelona)
After Barcelona won the 2004-2005 La Liga title the team organized a festival party in Camp Nou, during which Eto’o chanting to the fans “Madrid Cabron, Saluda al Campeon” meaning “Madrid, bastards, salute the champions”. The royal Spanish football federation fined Eto’o 12 euro’s for his comments, for which he later apologized. Eto’o played a total of 280 La Liga matches scoring a total of 162 goals with a goal ratio of goals per game and a total of 35 assists with an assists ratio of assists per game.
Didier Drogba
Drogba retired on the 8th of November 2018. He played a total 784 matches in his football career scoring a total of 362 goals, with a goal ratio of goals per game and a total of 141 assists with and assists ratio of assists per game, receiving a total of 128 yellow cards and a total of 5 career red cards.
Samuel Eto’o
He played a total of 877 matches in his football career scoring a total of 426 goals with a goal ratio of goals per game and a total of 136 assists with and assists ratio of assists per game receiving a total of 109 yellow cards and a total of 3 red cards.
Didier Drogba
Drogba has never won and African Nations Cup, he has won 1 champions league, 4 English Champion or Premier league, 2 FA Community Shield, ligue-1 goal of the years 2003-2004 season, has won 1 golden foot, among the FIFPro World XI 2007, 2 times African footballer of the year. He hold the record of most goals scored in the UEFA Champions League by an African player 44 goals, most goals scored for an English team in the champions league 36 goals. Most goals scored by an African player 104 in the premier league, one of six players in the premier league to score a hat-trick in consecutive games and Ivory Coast all-time goal scorer, the only player to score in four FA Cup finals.

Eto’o has won two African Nations Cup, 4 Champions League, zero English champion or premier league, 4 Spanish champion or La Liga, 4 time African footballer of the year, 1 golden foot. 1 FIFA club world cup, 1 Serie-A champion, 1 Olympic Gold medal, Pichichi trophy 2005,among FIFPro world XI 2005,2006, one time FIFA best forward of the year, second African footballer ever, after George Weah to be voted in top 3 for the FIFA Ballon d’or .
